Decor for Winter Blues
Do you also feel the after-holiday winter blues? Because I certainly do. Apart from the reason that the holidays are over, the lack of sunlight can also be a culprit. However, did you know that with a few small changes, you can maximize the amount of sunlight you get in the daytime in your home?
I’ll share a few simple tips in this slideshow that can help you make the most of sunlight indoors and reduce the bills, too. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.
Home Positioning and Windows
First and the most important thing is understanding where your home is positioned. East-facing windows shine brightest in the morning while west-facing ones bask in sunlight closer to dusk. North- and south-facing windows stay lit all day but don’t receive direct sunlight.
Check if your home has windows on the favorable sides; if so, that’s beneficial. If there’s an opportunity to add a window based on your home’s position, consider investing in this during winter.
Windows
Once you’ve confirmed that your windows are properly positioned, the next step is to change your curtains. If you only have heavy curtains or blinds, consider adding a double rail and placing sheer curtains in the center.
Keep the heavy curtains open during the day so that maximum light can come through. Also, remove or readjust any furniture blocking the natural light coming from the windows.
Mirror
The easiest and cheapest way to double the light in your space is by using mirrors strategically. Place them opposite windows to reflect every drop of sunshine.
Go with oversized mirrors that create an illusion of a brighter, larger room, plus, they’re super trendy nowadays.
You can also consider mirror-clad furniture for a subtle boost of reflectivity. Don’t stop at walls, add subtle accents around the house, such as mirrored trays or decorative mirror pieces.
White and Bright
Bold colors are trending these days, and in winter I prefer to go with light ones because dark hues intensify the gloominess during winter. On the flip side, soft white or pastel tones on walls, ceilings, and furniture brighten spaces instantly without much effort.
Of course, white doesn’t have to mean cold. Pair it with the season’s trendy accents like cherry red, yellow, or burgundy to keep a balance.
Layered Lighting
All the designers and home enthusiasts unanimously agree on one thing, and that is layered lighting. In the winter gloomy days, when it’s time for the sun to go and natural light to fade away, layering artificial light comes to the rescue.
Combine overhead fixtures with floor lamps and wall sconces to mimic the sun’s gradual warmth in your living spaces. Choose warm-toned LED bulbs, they’re energy-efficient and feel cozier than harsh white light. Place lights near reflective surfaces for added brightness.
Say Yes to Glass
Glass has a major comeback in home interiors this year and winter is the right time to incorporate this in your home. Glass accents are pretty and practical, and the best thing is they are major light enhancers.
Consider glass coffee tables, shelving, or even light fixtures to let brightness flow freely. Swap out heavy wooden doors for glass-paneled ones where privacy isn’t an issue. Glass decor, like vases or bowls, also adds sparkle, catching and spreading light beautifully.
Trim Those Winter Shadows
Got overgrown shrubs or trees blocking your windows? Drop the procrastination because it’s time for a trim. Outdoor plants can cast unwanted shadows inside, stealing precious daylight.
Keep greenery under control, especially on the sunniest side of your house. Think of it as a seasonal haircut for your yard. This will also improve curb appeal while inviting more sunlight indoors.
Light-Loving Decor Choices
Your decor can make or break your home’s brightness.
Choose lighter shades for rugs, cushions, and curtains as they reflect light and lift the mood. Avoid dark, heavy textures that absorb light.
Metallic finishes on vases, picture frames, or lampshades add a touch of sparkle. Even something as simple as swapping out dark tableware for white can make your space feel brighter and cheerier.
Reconsider Flooring
During winter, put away those heavy carpets, and if possible, replace the flooring with light-colored tiles or shiny wood ones that reflect light.
Now, replacing the flooring is not easy and also it might be out of the budget; however, changing or removing the carpets is doable and should be done right away to enjoy the best of winter natural light indoors.
Open Up Your Space
Feeling closed in during winter? Opt for an open floor plan and a major decluttering session. Clear the pathways and (if you can) swap the big furniture with low-profile ones that don’t hog the brightness.
Glass or open shelving can make a huge difference too. Less clutter and more openness mean light can bounce around freely and create a welcoming, airy vibe. This one is especially helpful for people who live in small houses.
Skylights
If you’re ready to splurge, skylights are the crown jewel of natural light solutions. They bring sunlight straight into your space, and no walls or obstructions are allowed.
Modern skylights come with energy-efficient options to keep warmth in and draft out. Even on cloudy days, they provide a gentle glow that transforms dark rooms. Think of it as a personal connection to the winter sky.
Brighten Your Entryway
Every corner or space in your home needs attention to make it feel less gloomy during winter. Entryways often feel like dark caves. Combat this by adding a light-hued rug, a mirror, and a well-placed lamp.
If your budget allows, add a glass panel door against the main door. Keep the main door open and the glass one closed to welcome natural light.
Even a cheery paint color on your front door can reflect brightness into the hall.
Accessorize with Light
From string lights to candles, accessories can brighten a space and create a warm atmosphere in minutes. Place LED fairy lights in glass jars for a magical touch. Use candles in reflective holders to amplify their glow.
Battery-powered lights are perfect for awkward corners that natural light can’t reach. These small additions bring a cozy charm that’s perfect for chasing away winter’s darkness.
Keep Walls Light
Check your walls and ceiling colors. Having light colors around the house instantly illuminates the space. Not just walls and ceilings, check your fabrics, such as bedding or sofa pillows and throws. Let’s say if your sofa is in a dark shade, cushions and throws should be light.
No, you don’t have to change everything at once. Walk around your house during morning sunlight and check the places that still have dark areas and where light is not reaching; try to illuminate them with light and warm color accents along with layered lighting.
Keep your Windows Clean
Even if you have big windows but you don’t clean them regularly, you will miss out on the maximum light that can enter your home. Set a schedule to clean your windows every two weeks, and make sure to clean both the glass and the window panes.
The clear view will enhance your home’s aesthetics and also allow natural light to brighten your space and decor. A little weekend deep cleaning session can help you create a welcoming space and enjoy the brightness during winter mornings for many weeks.
Go with Outdoors Indoors
Winter may lock you inside, but don’t let that stop you from bringing the outdoors in. Arrange plants near windows, they love the sunlight and add a fresh vibe.
Reflect natural light with water features, like a small indoor fountain. Even a bowl of fresh fruit can brighten your kitchen. Staying connected to nature keeps your space and your spirits light and lively.

Switch your Home Office
If your home office feels like a dungeon because the window is too small, it’s time for a switch. Move your workspace to a room with large windows to soak in all the natural light. Position your desk perpendicular to the window for even brightness without glare.
Add light-colored furniture to keep the space open and inviting. Natural light boosts focus and productivity. Plus, a view of the outdoors adds inspiration when you’re stuck on a Zoom call. Check out some amazing and best home office hacks for the New Year.
