Easy Veterans Day Crafts Ideas for Kids
This Veterans Day is an amazing opportunity to spark a love for the country and honor soldiers in young minds through easy crafts and activities. After all, crafts are the perfect way to educate kids in a fun way.
I’ve rounded up some simple but super fun craft ideas that’ll let your little ones show off their patriotic spirit. These activities are perfect for celebrating and learning—all while having a great time together.
DIY Rockets Craft
Just like a rocket soaring into the sky, our soldiers and veterans fly high with pride. So ask kids to honor them with some cute rocket crafts while you tell them stories of bravery and patriotism.
Under your supervision, allow them to cut out cone shapes from construction paper for the rocket bodies. Next, they need to cut out rectangular shapes for the fins.
Finally, glue the fins to the bottom of the cone. Decorate the rockets with stripes and stars.
DIY Flag Windsocks
Let the kids catch some patriotic breezes with DIY flag windsocks. It’s surprisingly easy to make with just a few crafting supplies.
Take an empty toilet paper roll, decorate it with red, white, and blue markers or paint, and add ribbon or streamers for the tails.
Kids will love seeing their work fly, especially if you hang them on a porch or balcony.
DIY Flag Bunting
Flag bunting can never go wrong. They are easy to create and you can use them for decor and save them away for the next festive occasion.
Help kids cut the triangle shapes in red, blue, and white paper and then give them freedom to decorate them however they like.
Once they finish their craft, string them together using twine or ribbon to create a colorful banner and hang it inside or outside of the home.
Pinwheel Parade
Kids love pinwheels (and adults do too). So why not make some with a patriotic touch?
Make patriotic pinwheels with paper, scissors, and a pushpin. Use red, white, and blue paper to make each one extra festive.
Kids will love holding these in a mini parade or watching them spin outdoors. It’s a fun way to add movement and color to your Veterans Day celebrations.
Patriotic Treats
Why limit crafts and activities to paper and scissors only? Bring them into the kitchen and bake some fun patriotic treats together.
Bake cupcakes with colored frosting or star-shaped sugar cookies. Baking helps kids develop fine motor skills as they measure, pour, and mix ingredients, and they’ll practice following instructions too.
Allow them to be creative when it comes to decorating the treats. As they add stars, stripes, and sprinkles, you can talk about what Veterans Day means, making the activity educational and tasty.
American Flag Mason Jars
This one never goes wrong. A Mason jar and your kid’s creativity can turn any boring nook into a fun decor space for this Veterans Day.
Kids can paint stripes or stars on the jars, and then use them as lanterns with tea lights inside. The soft and warm glow instantly elevates the decor and your mood.
Patriotic Paper Chains
Who doesn’t love paper chains? Super easy, super simple. Use red, white, and blue paper for this craft.
Cut stripes of paper in all three colors, loop and glue them to create links, and hang the chains around the house.
If your kid feels extra creative, ask them to create a soldier’s parade with cut-out soldier shapes from colored paper.
Glue them together to form a chain, adding details like faces and hats.
Handprint Flag Art
Kids and mess go hand-in-hand; so without worry about it, let them create a handprint flag art.
Have kids paint stripes in red, white, and blue color with their tiny hands, then add some blue in the corner and draw tiny stars for the finishing touch.
Cute little handprint art is one of those crafts you’ll want to keep for years.
Poppy Flower Pins
Poppies are a classic symbol of remembrance, so let’s make some poppy flower pins.
Help kids make poppy pins using red and black felt circles layered together and attached with a safety pin. You can even add green felt leaves for a natural touch.
Kids can proudly wear it as an appreciation for veterans wherever they go on Veterans Day.
Chalk Art
For those little artists, who are always ready to show their creative skills, sidewalk chalk is the perfect activity and craft for Veterans Day.
They can draw a big, colorful American flag, complete with red, white, and blue stripes and stars. Kids can also create patriotic symbols like stars, eagles, jets, rockets, and whatnot.
Star-Stubbed Wreath
Star-stubbed wreaths or garlands are another easy and affordable craft kids can make this Veterans Day.
Grab a paper plate, some red, white, and blue paper, and scissors. First, cut a hole in the center of the plate to make a wreath base.
Then, let the kids cut out (or stick on) stars in red, white, and blue, gluing them all around the rim.
Add a ribbon, and you’ve got a front-door-ready Veterans Day wreath made by your little creative artist.
Jet Plane Craft Adventure
Ready for some high-flying fun? For an engaging and educational Veterans Day activity, let the kids assemble a jet plane model kit or make their own jets.
If you have a plastic model kit, it’s a great way for kids to build their own mini-aircraft and learn about the planes used by the military.
For a DIY option, try crafting jets from paper towel rolls and construction paper. Paint them in camo or patriotic colors, and let their imaginations soar as they “fly” their jets around the house in honor of our veterans
Crafting Parachute Soldiers
Want a craft with some serious action? Kids can make their parachute soldiers. Imagine their happiness when the parachute will float in the air.
Start by crafting mini soldiers using small figurines, pipe cleaners, or even paper. Then, attach a small plastic bag or a coffee filter as a parachute, connecting it with string to the “soldier.”
Let them drop their creations from the roof or balcony and watch them float down like real paratroopers.
It’s a playful way to honor the brave service of paratroopers and adds a little thrill to their Veterans Day fun.
Paper Fans
Paper fans are an easy and affordable craft activity kids can try this Veterans Day. Help them cut out circles of red, white, and blue construction paper. Ask them to fold each circle in half, then fold it in half again.
Continue folding until you have a small triangle. Open the triangle slightly and glue the edges together to form a fan shape. Make several fans in different sizes.
You can use their craft pieces as decor around the house to personalize the holiday celebration.
