2024’s Hottest Home Design Trend

This year has seen so many exciting trends, but most of them are revivals of old interior styles. This year is all about blending nature, curves, and comfort with modern touches.

From warm, earthy tones paired with playful, dopamine-boosting decor, to high-gloss walls that shine next to textured layers, these days trends are full of creativity.

In this slideshow, I’ll take you through the hottest home design trends of 2024.

Warm tones

The focus on home interiors has completely shifted toward cozy and comfortable homes recently.

Homeowners are done with cool grays and sterile whites that lack personality. We saw a notable shift toward warm tones, like terracotta, mustard yellow, deep rust, and earthy browns.

Warm hues paired with natural materials like wood, leather, or woven textiles add an organic touch and make homes feel more personal and lived-in.

Demure Decor

Minimalism was redefined as demure decor in 2024, where less is truly more. The decor shifts from bold statement pieces to more of a muted, sophisticated look.

Simple lines with subtle textures become popular as they create calm, clutter-free, functional spaces.

This year, homeowners give preference to neutral color palettes with soft accent hues like pale blush, sage green, or dove gray to create zen-like living spaces.

High-Gloss Walls

2024 has also seen the resurgence of high-gloss walls. Previously reserved for cabinetry or trim, they’ve now found their place on walls.

With a modern, dramatic, and luxurious touch, a glossy finish offers a fresh alternative to traditional matte and eggshell paints on walls.

They are more suitable for small or dimly lit rooms. The glossy reflective surface bounces light around the room which adds a sense of sophistication that’s hard to ignore.

70s to 90s Throwback

Velvet sofas, shag rugs, geometric patterns, vintage posters, and neon lights are all nods to the past that are making a big statement in this year.

From the burnt orange tones of the ‘70s to the pastel pinks and curves of the ‘80s, and the minimalist, grunge vibes of the ‘90s, these trends blend to create a striking retro-modern look that dominates homes this year.

This bold fusion of old eras to modern homes brings both nostalgia and flair into contemporary spaces.

Terra-Cotta Tile

Natural and timeless terra-cotta tile has made a strong comeback. These earthy tiles, bring warmth, texture, and a timeless Mediterranean feel to modern home interiors.

The distinctive reddish-brown hue of these tiles is perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces. What sets terra-cotta tile apart from other materials is its versatility in color, texture, and also the natural, handcrafted look.

Sensory Gardens and Pathways

This year, outdoor spaces are being designed with more intention. Sensory gardens and pathways are becoming a favorite choice of outdoor decor among homeowners.

These spaces are designed to engage all five senses. Many prefer to incorporate plants that stimulate touch, sight, smell, taste, and hearing.

Soft grasses, fragrant plants, wind chimes, and water features like pools, fountains, and bubbling brooks are just some elements that can transform a garden into a sensory haven.

Cold Plunge Pools

Cold plunge pools are making waves in 2024, and for good reason.

People looking to incorporate relaxation and rejuvenation into their everyday routines are installing these pools in their backyards. These small, unheated pools offer a quick, refreshing dip in cold water.

The best thing is the compact size of these pools. They can be easily added to existing pools or patios or can be customized to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscaping.

Texture on Texture

Gone are the days when people stuck to one material or fabric like white or soft pastel colors. This year, it’s all about mixing and matching textures to create dynamic, tactile spaces.

The trend is all about combining different elements. Think rough-hewn wood with smooth marble and linen with silk or rough and refined textures such as a rustic brick wall paired with glossy lacquered furniture.

By playing with contrast like soft vs. hard, or shiny vs. matte, people have given their homes a more curated and luxurious feel this year.

Slow Decorating

In a fast-paced world where everything seems to be in demand, 2024 is seeing the rising trend of “slow decorating”.

Instead of going all out with a shopping haul influenced by every trend, slow decorating phenomena encourage intentionality and functionality before spending money on anything.

Homeowners preferred thoughtfully chosen items to create more meaningful and personalized spaces of 2024, that last longer than fleeting trends.

Murals

Murals are making a powerful comeback as we move through this year, transforming plain walls into works of art.

From abstract landscapes to detailed botanical designs, and from a variety of hand-painted to customized wallpaper, murals bring a level of personality and storytelling to spaces that no other design element can.

This year people use murals designed to bring art and life into their homes in a bold, unapologetic way.

Backyard Retreat

In 2024, the backyard retreat trend is all about turning outdoor spaces into personal havens. Homeowners are looking for ways to escape the hustle of daily life and work by transforming their houses and outdoors into serene places to unwind and rejuvenate.

Outdoor spaces are being redesigned to include cozy seating areas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and lush gardens. Even people with small backyards are incorporating vertical gardens, hanging lights, and comfortable furniture to maximize the available space.

Boucle

The infamous Boucle remains popular this year and people are loving it. Known for its looped, knobby texture, boucle fabric is irresistibly soft and provides an inviting texture.

This plush material is being used for sofas, armchairs, and even ottomans, but the boucle chair took the spotlight. The stuff perfectly adds a sophisticated yet snug vibe to any room.

What makes boucle so appealing is its ability to complement both minimalist and maximalist interiors.

Straight Lines, Meet Curves

2024 is the year of contrast, and one of the most striking design trends is the blending of straight lines with curves. Homeowners prefer a combination of clean lines and gentle curves.

The combination of the two creates a harmonious balance in interiors, offering both structure and movement. Sharp, angular furniture and decor are being softened with the introduction of round shapes and flowing forms.

High-Tech Lighting

High-tech lighting is illuminating homes in 2024. Smart lighting systems that can be controlled via apps or voice commands are becoming a must-have in all homes.

Beyond functionality, lighting design has taken a futuristic turn. Sleek, minimalistic fixtures with LED technology are being used to create dramatic effects.

Smart bulbs that can shift from warm to cool tones depending on the time of day are gaining popularity.

Crafty Curvatures

Homeowners are increasingly gravitating toward soft curves, where soft, rounded forms take the lead in everything from furniture to architectural details.

This trend is all about embracing fluidity and rejecting harsh angles. Arched doorways, circular windows, and curvy furniture pieces are making their way into homes, creating spaces that feel more organic and welcoming.
