The Nook Spot
I didn’t pick the obvious corner, I chose a weird wall cutout between two bookshelves that never got used. With a quick cleanup and fresh paint, it became a snug, hidden nook.
Sometimes the best reading spots aren’t where you’d expect. Look for overlooked spaces, behind doors, beneath stairs, or even wide hallway ends can become nook-worthy gold.
Cozy Base
Instead of a traditional chair, I layered a folded memory foam mattress on a wood platform I built using scrap planks. It’s low, comfy, and perfect for long reading hours.
Then I threw on a fleece-lined sherpa blanket, some oversized pillows, and a plush rug to warm it up. The base truly sets the mood for everything that follows.
Sound of Storms
Pair the sound of rain with vintage French café music and thank me later. I added a mini speaker hidden behind a pillow stack and made a looped rainy-day playlist.
The soft thunder, ambient background tunes, and distant raindrops tapping the glass? It’s like living in a scene from a movie, and it never gets old.
DIY Wall Art
I didn’t want plain walls, so I painted a faux book stack mural in deep jewel tones, think forest green and wine red, to mimic an old library.
Then I added two mini wooden ledges to hold candles and tiny trinkets. The wall turned into an art-meets-function statement without needing any store-bought decor.
Curtain Hideaway
I installed a ceiling-mounted curtain rod and hung gauzy, semi-sheer curtains that let in soft light while still creating a cocooned feel.
When it rains, I draw them closed and it feels like my own little tented escape. Choose calming shades like warm taupe or pale olive; it instantly makes the nook feel private, peaceful, and oh-so-personal.
Built-In Book Tower
Instead of shelves, I stacked wooden crates vertically and painted them the same color as the wall to blend in. It became my crate-tower bookshelf.
They’re easy to rearrange and surprisingly sturdy. Plus, it gave the nook a rustic, handmade touch. Fill them with your favorite reads and tuck in a few fairy lights for that dreamy effect.
Overhead Glow
I skipped lamps and opted for a soft, woven pendant light hanging right above the nook. It gives off a golden glow, like morning sun trapped in a basket.
Woven shades diffuse the light gently and feel so cozy during rainy days. If hardwiring is a hassle, try a plug-in pendant with a wall hook, no electrician needed.
The Mug Nook
Yes, I made space for snacks and a warm drink, obviously. I added a floating corner shelf just above the sitting area and stacked it with tea tins, cocoa packets, and a mug warmer.
Rainy days and warm drinks belong together. Now, I can sip chamomile while reading and not move an inch. Cozy factor: instantly doubled.
Window Whimsy
Raindrops on windows become art if you frame them right. I added a stained-glass film to the lower half of the window for privacy and color.
When it rains, the drops shimmer through the soft hues like little jewels. It’s such a small detail, but it makes the whole space feel enchanted and alive.
Layered Scents
Rainy-day reading deserves a signature scent. I layered soft amber candles with a linen spray on the cushions; together, they create the coziest atmosphere.
Choose scents that remind you of pages and rain, like sandalwood or tea rose. It turns the nook into a full-sensory experience, not just a reading corner. You’ll never want to leave.
Memory Wall
One wall became a mini collage of bookish memories. I pinned up quotes from my favorite novels, old train tickets tucked into pages, and Polaroids from past rainy-day reads.
It’s a personal gallery that keeps growing. This little touch adds personality and reminds you of moments you’ve lived through stories, like a visual journal, but for readers.
Rain Boot Storage
I turned the base of the nook into a hidden rain boot cubby, yes, really. By lifting the cushion platform with a hinged top, I created just enough space to tuck in boots, a folded umbrella, and a small towel.
When it pours outside, everything’s already there. Practical? Totally, and also weirdly satisfying.
Blanket Ladder
Instead of folding throws in a basket, I leaned a rustic wood ladder against the wall and draped each rung with a different blanket.
From chunky knits to lightweight quilts, it’s both functional and charming. It turns simple textiles into part of the decor, making it easy to grab a layer when the temperature drops.
Nook Companion
No nook is complete without a cuddly companion. I added a plush stuffed bear named “Fitzgerald” who now lives here full-time.
